Melbourne 2027: the state of play

The deal between the Victorian Government and the NFL, announced on 6 February 2025, commits the league to at least two games at the MCG between 2026 and 2029, with an option for a third. Game one is done. Several reports have pencilled in 2027 for game two, but nothing official has been published.

The sticking point is the calendar. The AFL season is shifted in 2027, with the Grand Final in October, which pushes the MCG's finals series later and onto the dates the NFL would typically want. Asked about it on 3 September 2026, the NFL's Peter O'Reilly said the league would find a good solution, which is encouraging but not a fixture.

Melbourne's 2026 NFL game at the G

It was a Friday in Melbourne and a Thursday night back in the States. The Rams were the designated home team, fittingly, since they hold marketing rights in Australia under the NFL's Global Markets Program. The 49ers had the better of the night, but the real headline was the crowd: 100,021, a full house and a statement about the appetite for the NFL here. Back home, the Seattle season opener was even moved a day to make room for the Melbourne game.

Getting to the MCG for NFL Melbourne

Melburnians know the drill, but visitors from interstate or overseas should note the options:

• Jolimont station: Metro trains on the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines, about a ten-minute walk.
• Richmond station: served by several Metro lines, also around ten minutes on foot.
• Trams: routes 70 and 75 along Wellington Parade and Brunton Avenue, plus routes 48 and 75.
• Flinders Street: a 15 to 20-minute stroll through Yarra Park.

The ground holds roughly 95,000 seated, with a total capacity above 100,000. Expect big queues at Richmond after the game; walking back to the CBD through the parklands is often quicker.

NFL Melbourne tickets: how the 2026 sale ran

One surprise for locals: the NFL sold through Ticketmaster Australia, not Ticketek, the MCG's usual partner. More than 200,000 people registered interest before the 2026 sale, which ran in stages:

• MCC member presale: 1 April 2026.
• Ticket and hotel packages: 6 April.
• Hospitality: 7 April.
• General public: 8 April 2026 at 10am.

As a 2026 reference, standing tickets started at AUD 95 and seats at AUD 140, with premium hotel packages from AUD 1,149. Prices for the next game are to be confirmed. Resale sites do exist, but tickets are mobile and linked to an account, and marked-up listings carry real risk. Budget and timing tips for NFL Melbourne 2027

The NFL has said it prefers to put the Australian game in week one, given the 15-hour flight from California. That is a preference, not a date: the 2027 schedule is to be confirmed, and the AFL finals could push things around. If it follows the 2026 pattern, you are looking at early September.
