NFL in MexicoNFL Mexico City 2027: what we know about the Estadio Banorte game
The NFL is coming back to Mexico City in 2027. A three-season agreement with Estadio Banorte, the renamed Estadio Azteca, covers 2026, 2027 and 2028, so the year is settled. The date, the host team and the opponent are still to be confirmed, and the league normally reveals matchups with its full schedule in May.
Is NFL Mexico City confirmed for 2027?
Yes, as a venue. Mexico City is one of the few international markets with a game guaranteed for 2027, thanks to a three-year deal tying the NFL to Estadio Banorte for 2026, 2027 and 2028.
What nobody can tell you yet is who plays, who hosts or on which weekend. The owners voted on 19 May 2026 to allow up to 10 league-managed international games from 2027, and teams can no longer shield their home dates from being moved abroad.
The usual rhythm: host cities and teams emerge around Super Bowl week in February, matchups and kick-off times arrive with the schedule release in May, and tickets follow from late May into the summer. International games are played between September and November, so there will be no NFL game in Mexico before September 2027. Our International Series 2027 overview tracks every city in one place.
Two decades of NFL at Mexico City's Azteca
Mexico City made history in 2005 by staging the first NFL regular-season game ever played outside the United States, in front of 103,467 people, still the league's record crowd. Five regular-season games have been completed there so far:
| Date | Matchup | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Oct 2005 | San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals | Cardinals 31-14 49ers |
| 21 Nov 2016 | Houston Texans at Oakland Raiders | Raiders 27-20 Texans |
| 19 Nov 2017 | New England Patriots at Oakland Raiders | Patriots 33-8 Raiders |
| 18 Nov 2019 | Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers | Chiefs 24-17 Chargers |
| 21 Nov 2022 | San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals | 49ers 38-10 Cardinals |
| 22 Nov 2026 | Minnesota Vikings at San Francisco 49ers | Still to be played |
One planned game never happened: Chiefs against Rams, scheduled for 19 November 2018, was moved to Los Angeles because of the state of the pitch. The 2026 return, with the 49ers as hosts, is a Sunday Night Football slot at 8.20pm Eastern. The NFL counts Mexico as its biggest fan base outside the US, at around 40 million people.
Estadio Banorte: getting to Mexico City's NFL stadium
The stadium has carried several names: Estadio Azteca for most of its life, Estadio Banorte under its current naming deal, and Estadio Ciudad de México during the 2026 World Cup. Its capacity after the pre-World Cup renovation has not been independently verified; figures of around 83,000 have been quoted, but treat that as to be confirmed.
- Tren Ligero (light rail): get off at Estadio Azteca station. The line starts at Tasqueña, where you change from Metro Line 2.
- Metrobús and shuttles: extra services depend on the event's transport plan, to be confirmed closer to the game.
Mexico City traffic on a game day is not something to gamble on. Public transport is usually quicker in the final kilometres. The city also sits at well over 2,000 metres, so visitors who fly in the day before should go easy on the alcohol and drink plenty of water.
How NFL Mexico City 2027 tickets are sold
Outside Europe the NFL uses local Ticketmaster platforms, and in Mexico that means Ticketmaster México. The steps that have worked for recent international games:
- Register your interest on the Mexico City page of nfl.com/international once it goes live for 2027. Registered fans receive sale dates and access links.
- Set up your Ticketmaster México account well before sale day and check that your card works for payments in pesos.
- Expect a sequence of windows: partner presales first, then the general sale. Tickets are delivered to your phone, usually shortly before the game.
2027 prices are to be confirmed. Demand in Mexico City is strong, and the resale market fills up quickly. There are resale platforms, but listed prices can be several times face value and mobile tickets tied to an account cannot always be transferred cleanly. Buy through official channels wherever possible. The quickest way to hear about the opening of sales is our email alert.
Budgeting for NFL Mexico City before the matchup is known
Hotels in neighbourhoods such as Roma, Condesa or the Centro Histórico fill up once the date is out, and flights to Mexico City rise sharply around November weekends when an NFL game is in town. Flexible bookings are the sensible hedge for now.
- Keep the window open: Mexico City games have so far fallen in October and November.
- Factor in the kick-off: an evening slot like the 2026 Sunday night game means a late exit and no cheap ride home.
- Ticket prices already recorded for previous games are displayed on this page; we do not guess 2027 figures.
Coming to Mexico City's NFL game from the US, the UK or Australia
For American fans, Mexico City is the most accessible international game on the calendar: short flights from Texas, California and the Midwest, no time-zone headache.
British fans used to the London games will find a very different atmosphere: louder, longer and very much a festival. Australians who saw the MCG game can compare notes on our Melbourne page.
